Sample Itinerary - Great Bear Rainforest Spring

Trip 1: Vancouver Island to Great Bear Rainforest

Day 1 Board Maple Leaf at Campbell River. Cruising
the Discovery Islands through Seymour Narrows. Wildlife viewing, evening beach walk or kayaking.

Day 2-3 Cruising Johnstone Srait and the Broughton
Archipelago. Watch for dolphins and other marine
mammals. Rainforest walk and coasal village exploration.
First Nations cultural centre visit.

Day 4-5 Cruise the wild outer coast, Cape Caution,
Fitzhugh Sound and the central Great Bear Rainforest
inlets and meadows. Shore trips on west coast beach,
coastal bog forest trail, rainforest. Watch for sea otters,
seabirds, humpback whales, grizzly and black bears.

Day 6-7 Visit small fishing port of Namu. Shore exploration
throughout the coastal fjordland, rainforest
walks highlighting the climate change from the dry
south to the moist north. Possible hot springs visit.

Day 8 Cruising to Bella Bella, watching for wildlife.

Trip 2: Great Bear Rainforest Spring

Cruise through the fjords and islands as the days
lengthen and the wildflower meadows bloom.
You’ll cruise the coast’s fjordlands to spectacular,
mountain-ringed anchorages, hotsprings, meadows,
river valleys and rainforests, as wildlife and
new growth rejuvenate the area in spring.

Day 1 Board Maple Leaf, orientation,
cruise into Fjordland viewing spectacular
mountains and waterfalls. Rainforest walk.

Day 2 Visit great Fjordland river estuaries, wild
flower meadows, bear habitat. Possible
bear viewing.

Day 3 Visit First Nations community of Klemtu,
including guided tour and conversations at
big house, example of First Nations
artistry, culture and architecture.

Day 4 Mainland inlet, bear viewing,
rainforest walk, waterfalls, inside passage
cruising, hot springs visit.

Day 5 Visit coastal community, sailing down
whale channel, viewing of marine
mammals including whales and sea lions.
Visit remote whale research station and
speak with scientists. Cruise to west coast
beach and explore.

Day 6 Sailing the outer coast, exploring remote
islands. Intertidal life, whales, seabirds,
beaches.

Day 7 Exploring north coast wolf habitat, cruising
from outer coast to inner coast, rainforest
walk.

Day 8 Cruising to Kitimat, wildlife viewing.

Sample Itinerary - Great Bear Rainforest & Kitlope

Travel down the coast’s longest, most spectacular
fjord into the worlds largest intact temperate
rainforest, the Kitlope.

Day 1 Board Maple Leaf at Kitimat, orientation,
cruising into the moutainous Gardner
Canal, possible whale viewing on the way.

Day 2 Morning hot springs soak above the beach.
Cruising deep into the Coast Mountains,
down he coast’s longest fjord, past water
falls and mountain goats. Ancient stories
of the landscape. Anchorage and explora
tion of the rainforest.

Day 3 Sailing deeper into the fjords. Anchorage
at Chief Mathews Bay. Exploration of the
small river estuary and meadow, wildflow
ers, and rainforest. Opional kayaking. Cruisi
ng to Kitlope Anchorage, the dramatic,
mountain-ringed terminus of the fjord.

Day 4 Entering Kitlope River estuary, and morning
visit to the famous G’psgolox monumenal
pole, with an epic story that spanned the
globe. Next we’ll spend the day exploring
the vast Kitlope River estuary. Brown bear
and black bears frequent it in spring, bald
eagles and other birds also live here. We’ll
travel gradually all the way up the river to a
lake. Stories of the Kilope people who still
come here each year to live and fish.

Day 5 Further explorations in the natural and
cultural history of the Kitlope.

Day 6 Sailing up the fjord to an important cultural
site, where monumental artwork and
stories of challengee and triumph are told.
Fishing.

Day 7 Oyacumish, whale watching, and sail
ing outt of the steepest mountains to an
estuary frequented by wolves. Further cruis
ing to a second naural hot springs. Hot
spring soak, and celebratory dinner.

Day 8 Cruising to Kitimat, watching for whales.

west coast summerEnjoy the full bloom of early summer in the Great Bear Rainforest. Bears feast on sedges in river estuaries before moving upland for summer berries, long daylight hours provide plenty of time for exploration of west coast beaches, rain- forest and islands. Day 1 Board Maple Leaf, orientation, cruising Douglas Channel, wildlife viewing.

Day 2 Hot springs, cruising to west coast, whale viewing, visit with whale researchers.

Day 3 West coast beaches exploration and sailing, wildlife viewing.

Day 4 Mainland inlet, bear viewing, rainforest walk, waterfalls. Optional evening kayak.

Day 5 Visit community of Klemtu, including guided tour and conversations at big house, example of First Nations artistry, culture and architecture.

Day 6 Fjords, estuary bear viewing.

Day 7 Fjords, rainforest walk, visit with biologists at field station.

Day 8 Cruising to port, wildlife viewing.

Day 3 Cruising to one of the leading grizzly bear havens. Extended watching for griz- zly bears. Optional evening kayak, fish ing, art.

Day 4 Morning shore walk, visit First Nations village, Klemtu. Big House tour by village guide. Intertidal life. Fjord anchorage.

Day 5 Exploring coastal river by zodiac. Forest walk. Sea lion and black or grizzly bear viewing. Nature hike. Hot springs.

Day 6 Spirit bear island anchorage. Full day on shore at spirit bear viewing stands with our Gitga'at friends and guides at Gribbell Island. Evening: Whale Channel, humpback whale watching. Optional kayak.

Day 8 Outer coast beach exploration, sailing and cruising the western waters, whale viewing, shore trips.

Day 1 Board your ship, orientation, cruising. Island anchorage, river walk exploration, learning about the 'salmon forest'. Welcome dinner.

Day 2 Cruising the spectacular mainland coast, past waterfalls and mountains that rise from the sea. Whale watching. Exploring mainland inlet and estuarine ecosystem, focus of wildlife in this season.

Day 3 Cruising Princess Royal Channel. Mainland inlet popular with grizzly bears. River and meadow exploration, bear viewing. Evening hot springs soak.

Day 4 Visit to island with high frequency of spirit bears. Planned day at viewing stands, cruising to new inlet.

Day 5 Rainforest trail walk, whale watching, cruising. Visit to village of Klemtu. Tour of spectacular big house and learning about living on the coast and the Kitasoo Xai'Xais history and culture here. Optional evening kayak.

Day 6 Watching for wildlife as you return to Bella Bella.
